Trooper Fail

I just finished watching the new Star Wars Old Republic trailer that was presented at E3 this week and I have to say it looks pretty good. For something that was announced almost three years ago it probably should look pretty awesome. Considering they’re shooting for late 2011 release and they’re not in wide spread beta yet, I am going out on a limb and saying they won’t be releasing till early to mid 2012. Granted, it took like seven years to develop WoW but not to fill Blizzard’s head with anymore delusions of grandeur but, WoW was really groundbreaking. We look at WoW today and think it isn’t cutting-edge but when it came out it was pretty bad ass.

It’s going to be interesting to see if they rush into production on this game. Chances are if they do rush the production they’re going to end up shipping a shit product which has never really stopped game developers before.

Sure the trailers look great, but I need to see more actual game play to pass judgment. What little of the game play trailers I have seen look a little too canned to me. Plus, I don’t trust game trailers I see before a full public beta is out in the wild.

So, in the immortal words of Hunter S. Thompson, “Let’s get down to brass tacks. How much for the ape?”. Am I going to buy it? It depends. First, I need to see a beta and see if they’re going to deliver what they promise. Second, they need to show that they’re taking the development process seriously. You can put all the cut scenes in the world out on the internet and it doesn’t mean you have a good product. Third, they have to charge a reasonable price for what they’re offering.

In any event, I don’t see beta happening for this title until late this year, at the very earliest.

Also, on a side note, if anyone knows how to get rid of this damn Java exploit virus go ahead and let me know. "Exploit:Java/CVE-2010-0840.CI" Stupid Chinese already hacked my Gmail account...

I watched a friend take a crack at the WoW: Cata beta and swore there was no way it would be ready for launch when it was and they pulled it off. Granted, I'd say Blizzard has this down to a fine art but I wouldn't write BioWare off just yet. My worries for the game is actually more along the lines of the blending of RPG with MMO. I'm not sure how well the factor of the unknown will go over with people who like to research boss fights and coordinate raids like they're directing and producing a flash mob.
I never would have pegged you for a trekkie... ;) the porn virus is definitely more in character. Has bioware even done an MMO yet? Someone should let them know 4-16 concurrent players isn't exactly massive, just in case! They should have gone with a Dragon Age MMO if only for the fact they wouldn't have to pay Lucas (or whomever owns that brand now) royalties.
Sidenote: I preferred your intro picture of the police arresting the stormtrooper better than DV, but he's cool too. Well, at least he was cool... until Hayden Christensen hit him with a bus of bad acting and destroyed his supervillain reputation.
I thought the testing reference was gold!
